These shorter days and colder nights have turned me into a hermit of sorts. As soon as 3pm comes around, I start to feel sleepy, cold, and hungry. But then again, I’m always hungry, so I can’t really blame that on the season!
And of course, being outside less inevitably means a lot more evenings and days are spent at home. So instead of wasting away watching bad tv, I’ve decided to embrace this time indoors and put it to good use. There are so many recipes and skills that I want to practice and (maybe) perfect. Being able to make fresh sourdough bread, learn to knit, grow herbs (I can do that in winter, right?), and maybe even learning to make my own pasta are all up there on the list.
But right at the top of the list are cocktails because:
1) Cocktails are amazing and not having to leave the house for them is even more amazing.
2) Being able to make cocktails is pretty impressive.
3) Drinking keeps you warm in winter. (I’m not encouraging alcoholism here, just a tipple should suffice.)
Now, I’m no cocktail master, but this is really delicious and actually pretty good for you as far as cocktails go. If you omit the vodka then it’s damn near virtuous, and packed full of fresh fruit, citrus and superfoods.

Superfood Autumn Pear + Cinnamon Cocktail (adapted from here)
2 medium sized pears, peeled and finely chopped
1 bottle of Elderbrook cordial tonic
2 large handfuls of fresh mint
125ml cinnamon vodka
750ml sparkling water
Agave or raw honey to sweeten, if desired
- If you don’t have cinnamon vodka then just use normal good quality vodka and throw in a few pinches of cinnamon, and adjust to your liking. I found these cinnamon extract spice drops which would work perfectly too.
- If you're not able to use the Elderbrook cordial tonic, then I suggest making a honey and lime simple syrup, this one looks great and really easy. You could always add a pinch of baobab yourself.
Place the chopped pears into a large pitcher and top with the torn fresh mint leaves. Cover with the Elderbrook cordial tonic (or simple syrup) and muddle together to release all the liquid from the pears and combine the flavours. Taste, and add agave or honey if desired. Add the cinnamon vodka, and top up with sparkling water. Pour over ice, top with fresh mint and serve!
