Mornings. I really do love them.
The smell of coffee and chatting with my husband over breakfast before the day gets away from us. There’s something about slowly mapping out my day whilst the world wakes up that makes me feel like I’m ready for anything that comes my way.
But, waking up. Urgh. I hate it. My body does everything possible to resist getting out of bed, even with the promise of all the pancakes and coffee in the world I still can’t seem to rise. And when you don’t have an office to go to every day it can become even harder to not hit the snooze button until 9am. And then suddenly, those productive days happen a little less often. So, I’ve decided to work on it, a morning marathon training of sorts (just without the running).
So, the plan is earlier nights, absolutely no snooze button, and the incentive of breakfast (my favourite meal of the day) and eventually I might build up to a bit of yoga… but I’m getting way ahead of myself.
So for now, I’m making this tonic at night to wake up to first thing. I’m hoping the powerhouse of benefits from these ingredients will make me feel like a new women. And if they don’t, well it’s pretty damn tasty and beats boring orange juice any day.
If you have any advice or tips on how to become better at waking up, then please tell me! And if you make this, let me know how it turned out.
Citrus & Turmeric Morning Tonic
1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
2 tsp raw honey (I mix this with a little warm water first, to help it blend into the juice)
1/2 lemon, freshly squeezed
1/2 inch piece of freshly grated ginger
Pinch of freshly grated lemon zest (organic, if possible)
2 tsp ground turmeric, or more if you can handle it
Pinch of fresh ground pepper (this activates the benefits of the turmeric, so don’t leave it out)
Apple cider vinegar (optional)
Stir the liquids together in a small pitcher, and then add the spices and whisk until combined. And, that’s it! if you want to make this even simpler then make it the night before and store in an airtight container in the fridge, then down it as you rush out of the door. If we’re honest, who wants to be up grating ginger at 8am in the morning.
